Obama made the remarks while discussing the need to identify and encourage a new generation of leaders rather than relying continually on established figures from older generations.
“Getting younger voices out there, giving them platforms, I think is really important. Identifying this generation of leaders as opposed to past generations of leaders, this generation of thinkers, rather than those who still have a lot of wisdom, but are not as attuned to the moment,” he said.
The former president acknowledged that older generations possess valuable wisdom and experience but argued that younger people are often more connected to the challenges and circumstances of the present.
He also criticised what he described as older men holding on to political power, suggesting that fear of becoming irrelevant or dying could contribute to the tendency.
“One of the challenges we face globally is old men clinging to power. And I say men very deliberately. They’re afraid of irrelevance, and death, and this has been a theme of humanity since its inception. And don’t encourage it,” Obama said.
His comments have drawn attention to the broader debate over generational change in leadership and the need to create space for younger people to participate in shaping society.
